Kibale Forest National Park – Uganda’s Primate Capital

Welcome to the Heart of the Primate World

Tucked away in the lush, rolling landscapes of western Uganda lies Kibale Forest National Park — a tropical rainforest teeming with life, adventure, and raw beauty. Often referred to as “The Primate Capital of the World,” Kibale offers an extraordinary opportunity to walk alongside our closest relatives in the wild.

This 795 km² sanctuary spans across Kabarole, Kyenjojo, and Kamwenge districts, just a 4-5 hour scenic drive from Kampala or Entebbe. Whether you’re seeking chimpanzee encounters, birdwatching, or tranquil nature walks, Kibale delivers an unforgettable wildlife experience.

History of Kibale Forest National :

Kibale’s rich biodiversity has been under protection since 1932, when it was first established as a forest reserve. In 1993, it was officially upgraded to national park status to further protect its unique ecosystem, now a globally significant habitat for endangered chimpanzees and 20 other primate species.

Why Visit Kibale Forest National Park?

🐒 Chimpanzee Trekking & Habituation Experiences

Kibale is home to more than 1,500 chimpanzees, many of which have been habituated for responsible tourism. Spend an hour observing their natural behavior during a trek, or opt for a chimpanzee habituation experience and spend an entire day alongside researchers learning their ways.

Did you know? Chimpanzees share over 95% of human DNA, making the connection you’ll feel during your encounter truly profound.

🦍 The Highest Primate Diversity in Africa

Kibale holds the title for Africa’s highest concentration of primates, with 13 primate species including:

  • Red colobus monkeys

  • Black-and-white colobus monkeys

  • L’Hoest’s monkeys

  • Olive baboons

  • Blue monkeys

  • Grey-cheeked mangabeys

You’ll be amazed by how much wildlife activity hums through the treetops here.

🐦 Birdwatching & Biodiversity at Kibale

Beyond primates, Kibale is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting over 375 bird species, including the African pitta, great blue turaco, and green-breasted pitta. The park’s butterfly species, forest elephants, reptiles, and unique flora make every guided walk a magical exploration.
